Background of the Study
Mentorship programs are increasingly recognized as valuable tools in enhancing student motivation and academic success. In Awka South Local Government Area, Anambra State, these programs connect students with experienced mentors who provide guidance, support, and encouragement. Research indicates that mentorship can foster self-confidence, clarify academic goals, and promote positive behaviors (Ifeanyi, 2023). Effective mentorship programs also facilitate personal growth and professional development by exposing students to new ideas and career opportunities (Nwachukwu, 2024). However, the implementation of such programs faces challenges including limited mentor availability and resource constraints (Chima, 2025). This study explores the role of mentorship in improving student motivation, examining both its benefits and limitations, and aims to propose strategies that can maximize the positive impact of mentoring initiatives on academic achievement and overall student well-being.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential benefits of mentorship programs, many students in Awka South exhibit low motivation and engagement due to the limited availability and inconsistent quality of mentoring support (Ifeanyi, 2023). The lack of structured mentorship initiatives has led to missed opportunities for academic and personal development. This situation underscores the need to evaluate the role of mentorship in fostering student motivation, identify the challenges faced, and determine effective strategies to enhance the mentoring process, thereby promoting higher levels of student engagement and success.
Objectives of the Study:
To investigate the impact of mentorship programs on student motivation.
To identify challenges affecting mentorship initiatives.
To recommend strategies for improving mentorship effectiveness.
Research Questions:
How do mentorship programs affect student motivation?
What challenges hinder effective mentorship?
What strategies can enhance the impact of mentorship programs?
Research Hypotheses:
Participation in mentorship programs positively influences student motivation.
Limited mentor availability negatively affects program effectiveness.
Structured mentorship initiatives lead to improved academic engagement.
